Chapter 12 A paper’s journey around the world

Britain is small, but London is huge.

This is the mantra of Handel, editor-in-chief of the world's top journal "Nature".

Whenever he introduced the city of London to friends from afar, he would introduce it like this.

This shows how deeply Handel loved this city.

Even though I woke up early in the morning, there was still mist outside the window, the sky was overcast, and the thick clouds seemed to be able to squeeze out water at any time. But he was still in a good mood.

For an orthodox British gentleman, he has long been accustomed to the rainy weather in London.

And there are happy events.

As he expected, the paper published in Nature that proved the N-S equation caused great repercussions in the entire academic community. It is conceivable that Nature will receive a large number of high-quality papers in the next few months to discuss this academic issue.

This paper was obtained through personal connections.

Originally, according to Smith's original intention, this paper was to be published first in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences or Science.

It’s not that Nature is bad, but Smith is, after all, a member of the National Academy of Sciences.

After all, there is competition among the world's top journals, especially comprehensive journals.

Whoever publishes more high-quality papers will have a higher natural index.

High-quality papers like Smith's, which will inevitably cause controversy in the academic community, are even more popular. You must know that the impact factor is directly proportional to the number of citations. As a top player in the journal industry, Nature is well aware of the benefits.

After all, every time it is refuted, it will also contribute an impact factor.

If it turns out that this paper is wrong, it will be retracted, and the impact factor it deserves has been earned, so there is no need to complain.

Well, Handel had to admit, he didn't like Americans. Because these bandits took away all the splendor and glory of the Empire on which the Sun Never Sets, but he liked Smith quite a lot.

There are not many native-born Americans who are still willing to do basic research in a down-to-earth manner. Of course, it may also be due to family background. Smith's father was a highly respected mathematics professor.

Okay, I thought too far again.

He greeted his secretary very gentlemanly, then walked into his office, hung his hat and black umbrella on the shelf, and sat at his desk and turned on the computer.

Soon the secretary walked into the office and brought a cup of coffee.

Except for Mondays and special circumstances, Handel's review time is every morning.

The secretary closed the door and the computer just finished starting up. When he picked up the coffee and took the first sip, it rang several "ding dongs" in succession.

To Handel, this was an extremely pleasant sound.

Since the last submission system upgrade, the backend has been able to filter by keywords to prioritize the types of papers the editor wants to see.

This feature is really useful.

For example, when Smith's paper caused shock, Handel naturally set the NS equation as a keyword.

Of course, he is not very interested in writing a paper now.

Because the real boss is probably still in the research stage at the moment, and even if he wants to publish a paper to refute, he will probably have to wait a while longer.

But he doesn't mind seeing the reaction.

Opening the submission system, there are already two discussions on N-S papers.

Handel opened the first chapter and, as usual, spent a minute studying the author.

Well, from China?

Or a student?

Well, it turns out that newborn calves are not afraid of tigers.

Especially the title of the thesis, "On the Analysis of Three Errors in the Process of Proving the Existence and Smoothness of the Smith N-S Equation".

Handel subconsciously moved the mouse to the reject button.

This is obviously unreliable.

But his professionalism still made him click on the cover letter first.

Then Handel hesitated.

He is not a mathematician, and his PhD major is not mathematics, but he clearly remembers what one of the previous reviewers, a math master, said to him.

"If there is a flaw in Smith's paper, it is most likely in the description and definition of divergence. I am not sure that he is right for the time being, and I am equally not sure that he is wrong."

It just so happens that in the cover letter, the first topic is about divergence.

Okay, diverge...

At least it proves that this student from China is still quite capable.

Or maybe it should be shown to the reviewers.

The author did not screen or appoint reviewers. Handel checked the clean draft of the paper. The author named WeiNing did not leave any identity information in the clean draft of the paper.

In view of Ning Wei’s status, Handel decided to use double-blind review.

In short, neither the author nor the reviewers know each other's identity.

In fact, Nature only started to try this review method in recent years after soliciting opinions from all parties, but it is not used much.

Otherwise, the author will not be allowed to recommend or apply for avoidance of reviewers in the manuscript collection system.

Each method has its advantages and disadvantages, but Handel feels that the double-blind method has more advantages than disadvantages when reviewing this student's mathematics paper.

Now that Smith's paper has been obtained, of course it must be used to its maximum effect.

As long as this paper is really good, why can't it be published?

So he naturally forwarded the paper to Roman Wilson, deputy editor in the Washington editorial office, through the submission system. I believe this PhD in mathematics should be equally interested in this paper.

China, Jiangcheng.

When Ning Wei woke up amidst the noise, it was already broad daylight.

The three people below were noisy and energetic.

"You're a senior and you still want to have a dormitory? You guys can't think of that!"

"Oh, the four girls in my dormitory are all single now. If you are not interested, and Liu Cong and I have seen it, their looks are definitely above 70, without makeup! So, do you want to join our group? Activities can be done at your own leisure.”

"Bah, can I not participate? If I don't go, I'm afraid Ning's son will be deceived by you and become lame!"

"Oh, Ningwa is obviously our son. When did he become your son?"

Ning Wei picked up the phone speechlessly and took a look at it, 11:20.

He remembered that he went to bed around eight-thirty.

I had only slept for more than two hours, but I didn't seem to feel sleepy at all.

If it had been before, he might have closed his eyes and fallen asleep again.

But at this moment, he only felt energetic. Of course, the most important thing was that he was very hungry. He had never been so hungry before.

That kind of hunger that really feels like you can eat a cow can drive people crazy.

So he turned over and got up.

"Um?"

Three eyes focused on him.

"Who has something to eat? Give me something to eat first. Mr. Xuan will treat you to a treat at noon today. It was agreed yesterday. The place is casual. We will set off after I finish washing up."
